Anomaly Cover Reveal

Cover reveal time!

(Sort of…I posted this reveal to social media a couple of weeks ago, yet somehow neglected to post it to my actual website. In my defence, I was travelling through rural France at the time and probably delirious from eating too much soft cheese.)

Anomaly’s stunning cover was designed and illustrated by the very talented Micaela Alcaino. Micaela is an incredibly accomplished designer, so I was blown away when I found out she’d be designing my cover and absolutely chomping at the bit to see what she’d come up with (I was also knee-deep in edits at the time and fantasizing about the cover got me through some tough days.)

Publishers don’t always involve the author in the cover design process, but I was lucky in that my editor at Affirm Press shared early artwork with me and asked for my input.

It was one of those times where my ad creative background came in handy, too, as reviewing art direction and design is a big part of that gig, and I think it helped that I understood what stage we were at in the design process and what was yet to come.

I was obsessed with Micaela’s design from the moment I saw it. It was still mostly greyscale at that point, but I immediately loved how dynamic and dramatic it is – and that Piper (my FMC) was front and centre. The colours, fonts and detailing evolved over time, and the end result features quite a few nods to the plot – the lightning, the birds, the Australian landscape, and, of course, my beloved Griff 🐶 There’s also a subtle hint at one of the bigger reveals in the book, but I can’t explain that one without wandering into spoiler territory, so… yeah 🙂 Suffice to say I’m absolutely thrilled with how it turned out and I can’t wait to see it on bookstore shelves come August 27!

Along with her cover reveals, she often posts behind-the-scenes overviews of her creative development process, and it’s fascinating to see how each design evolved from initial concepts to final art.

On a separate note – I’m very aware that this is the first time in a LONG time I’ve posted an update to this site. The reason (*ahem* excuse) for this is that I entered an editing vortex this time last year and really only just emerged from it a month or so ago. I’m going to try and post more regularly from here on in… starting with book launch details 💙
